Artist’s Statement
The themes vary in few areas. My interest lies in the interactions between space and time, matter and metaphysics and the recollection of these states which may have been emotionally loaded at the time of perception or still are.
I allocate a certain altered set of conventions in order to “record” these interactions: ornament and pattern as a different shape and distortion of the visible. (Or as in earlier work: the distortion of objects.) As the impression of a form can be ‘compressed’ in the imagination, so can the translation of so- called ‘reality’ be paraphrased in terms of ornament or pattern elements in a given time-frame.
The attempt to shed light on the experience of time through memory (and eventually to define oneself and one’s relationship to the world) is one of my pre-eminent themes.
It is an attempt to find a new interpretation of reality through memory. I apply virtual imagery to step into ‘memory spaces’ and, by means of objects that one believes to remember, I retrieve or re-evoke emotions connected with them.
Remembering, on the one hand, has a fleeting quality, which is characteristic
of time. On the other hand, reality is gradually being replaced by constructions and images that relate a story or a moment differently from how it really happened. In essence, while remembering, I‘re-invent’ myself anew.
Memory then does not reveal reality as it really was but shows us our own truth.
To recall is also to find one self wandering through imaginary rooms that are willy-nilly connected to a particular feeling of time.
